This position is located in the Division of Maintenance at the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, in Vienna, VA.

Wolf Trap is located in Vienna, Virginia, approximately twenty miles west of Washington, DC. There is no public transportation available.

The primary purpose of the position is to perform gardener duties that are necessary for the proper maintenance and care of landscaped areas.

Work requires frequent walking, standing, pushing of carts and wheelbarrows, bending, and stooping.  Climbs ladders to trim and/or prune trees including stretching to reach tree limbs.  Required to move arms and legs in operating tractor and equipment controls.  Frequently lifts heavy objects such as bags of fertilizer, grass seed, etc. ( up to 80 pounds).  May work from an aerial lift.

Most work will be done outside in extreme temperature, humidity, and climate changes.  In some instances the conditions will involve working in air contaminated with chemical dust and sprays being used on trees and shrubs.  Will be required to wear protective clothing, as well as normal safety items such as gloves, boots, glasses etc.

Uses judgment within the framework of good gardening practices to perform a wide range of gardening work.  Prepares soil beds and planing areas considering the individual needs and characteristics of plants, trees, and shrubs.  Uses various feeding techniques to improve growth and health of plants and or flowers planted or transplanted.  Uses pruning to maintain a proper balance between root and top growth, modify or maintain the natural form and increase flower production and promote growth.  Recommends insect control measures and obtains prior approval for use of pesticides or herbicides and applies chemical compounds for specific conditions.  Measures include biological controls.  Recognizes and controls infrequent plant diseases, cold damage, and mineral deficiencies.  Records corrective procedures sued, and the results achieved.  Removes rocks, leaves limbs, and trash from grounds and garden areas.  Operates pickups, and stake truck to transport supplies and material from source to work sites with the park and on public roads.  The incumbent performs snow and ice removal using a variety of snow removal equipment including truck mounted snow plows, sand spreaders, shovels and scrapers.  Operates gasoline and diesel powered tractors.  Tractors are field type with towed or attached equipment.  Equipment is usually equipped with independent controls requiring operator to operate both at the same time making adjustment as necessary.  Will also operate lawn tractors and a self-powered hydraulic sweeper.

To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate enough experience in your application to show you possess sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position without more than normal supervision (Screen Out Element).


REQUIREMENTS:

Appointment will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation. Under the requirements of the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12), all new Federal Employees must pass a background investigation. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

New employees of the Department of the Interior must identify a financial institution for direct deposit of net pay within 30 days of entrance on duty.

NPS uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards.

Applicants must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license or District of Columbia driver's license.

This is not a drug tested position.

Applicant must be able to work alternative work schedules, shift rotations, including night shift, holidays, and weekends.

Incumbent will be required to work outdoors, often under adverse conditions.
